Borough Councillor for Polesworth West
John was born at Manor Hospital, Nuneaton, and lived in Bulkington until the age of three, when the family moved to Blackpool, where his father was involved in the building of the prototype and later the production of the Hawker Hunter Jet Fighter.
John moved back to Exhall after he had contracted rheumatic fever and was advised to move away from the coast. His father, a toolmaker, worked for HawkerSiddley, Dunlop, and Webster & Bennett’s.
John was a pupil at Revoe School (Blackpool), Wheelwright Lane Junior School (Exhall) and Nicholas Chamberlain School(Bedworth), and later at Barkers Butts Technical College (Coventry).
He started work as a Trainee Transmission Line Surveyor planning routes for 400Kv power lines. That was when he met Wendy, when he was working in the Scunthorpe area. Wendy was the daughter of his landlady. He realised that the constant travelling around the country was not conducive to the budding relationship with Wendy so, when the opportunity arose, he joined John Laing Construction as a Junior Site Engineer. After four years, John transferred to the planning department, after being involved on many large projects (Leicester Royal Infirmary, Birmingham Airport, National Exhibition Centre and the National Ice Stadium). Eventually working as senior Tender Planner, John took redundancy from John Laing’s in 2000 when John Laing’s was bought by O’Rourke’s. John was going to retire at this stage, but was headhunted by Ballast Needham, a large multinational construction company, as Regional Planner for the midlands. John left Ballast Needham in 2003 to join Vinci Construction as Regional Planner for the midlands area and he then retired in 2012.
John is married to Wendy and they have three children, Deborah who lives in Aberdeen, Kirsty and Matthew who both live in Polesworth. Kirsty has three children and Matthew has two children.
John is a member of Polesworth Parish Council and relinquished his role as Chairman after being elected as a Councillor for North Warwickshire Borough Council.
John’s hobbies are golf, target shooting, bowls and dominoes. John is a member of the National Trust and supports the World Wildlife Fund.
